I spent 40 years working in NSW government high schools as a Visual Arts Teacher in western Sydney, Penrith area. Working and teaching young students’ skills in planning, making and refining their artmaking was not only a great career, but also just so rewarding in many ways. As a Head Teacher, CAPA, I was very grateful to have worked beside some of the most gifted and talented Art teachers & students. I learnt more from them than they did from me.
After completing my HSC, I went to Newcastle Teachers Collage, 1978-81, doing my Batchelor of Visual Arts B.Art. My major was in printmaking and drawing. In later years, I completed a Master of Art Education, M.Ed-Art. As a classroom teacher and a Head Teacher CAPA, I was lucky enough to have worked in many 2D & 3D mediums which have helped develop my skills & abilities in making artworks in most areas of interest.
Currently I mainly work in oil paints, looking at landscapes and old building for inspiration. I have had the opportunity to travel, including the various Australian landscapes to inspire me to create the artworks that I like making. Looking for patterns in the landscape is what I aim to explore and make designs about. These patterns, shapes, colours and old discarded objects give me things to draw inspiration from and show a beauty that I find interesting.
I don’t think that I’m a painter’s painter – I tend to draw with paint more than the traditional methods of landscape paintings. This allows me to play more with the pattern making style that I’m currently stuck on. And yes, I do like painting rocks… 😊
