Dave Ramsland

It was Bela Ivanyi who inspired me to connect with my artistic self and, for me, painting developed into a life-long obsession filled with the excitement, challenges and frustrations of exploring and experimenting with the way the artist can make the paint play out on the canvas. I love the way a work evolves and the exhilaration that comes from getting it just right.

In 1986 I moved from Sydney to the south coast of NSW  and have spent the last 30 years developing and refining my techniques whilst networking with other artists in the region. Apart from this, I am largely self-taught and have enjoyed the freedom of approach that this has allowed me.  My works have always ranged from the traditional landscapes and seascapes to the more contemporary or abstract, depending on the story needing to be told. Having said that, I have found the natural beauty in this area offers wonderful subject matter for the sort of more traditional work I like to create.

A Selection Of My Work

South Curl Curl Pool. Capturing a stormy sky over a turbulent surf, the manmade pool jutting defiantly out into the forces of nature. Oil on MDF.
Country Creek traversing the landscape. An attempt to capture the contrasting colours of the drying Australian bush. Oil on MDF.
Burrewarra Point in the morning light. A larger painting inspired by a small plein air work done on an outing to Guerilla Bay. OIL on MDF.
New Years Day 2020. A large Oil on MDF. A symbolic representation of the day after the fires…the black burnt ground, the white and ash grey remnants, the patches of surviving green grass, the dying fire…strange beauty in the aftermath of such destruction.
Gums in the Folds. I wanted to capture the sense of the natural secrets that are hidden in the gullies and undulating hills typically found in the place in which I live.
